I totally forgot about this - but I got to see Martha, Marcy, May, Marlene last week in order to review it. I was delighted to see the critics were right - its brilliant.
The story focuses on Elizabeth Olsen who plays Martha, who has just escaped from a cult. The film sees her return to her family and try to rebuild a connection with her sister. The story of her life in the cult is retold through a series of flashbacks.
It's completely and utterly brilliant. It's quite dark and disturbing in places. It's told fantastically through the use of flashbacks and you find yourself really believing in Elizabeth Olsen's character. It's so wonderful to see an Olsen sister acting with actual skill as opposed to cuteness and light. Its a star making performance and she really makes you believe she is Martha.
However the only issue I had with the film is that I dont see how the cult could have damaged her way of thinking that badly in just two years. I suppose thats ignorance on my behalf really! I don't know much about mental manipulation by cults. Specialist subject I suppose!
Still, it's really worth seeing. I wont ruin anymore of it for you but I will say that the ending is so.......
