The Do’s and Don’ts of Fall Style

“Each moment of the year has it’s own beauty.”

Fall is a great time to experiment with different styles, and try new things.  It is also a time when creativity is your friend, so finding new ways to put outfits together is something you can really have fun with!

Layers are your friend, sweaters are a must and boots make their reappearance after a summer hiatus.  So how do you know what is good for you to wear, and what is not?  The great news is that there are so many different styles, colors and options for outfits that there are many more opportunities for you to find what works for you.  Here are some do’s and don’ts that I follows, I believe they will help you too:

  1. Do wear different lengths of clothing – a long sweater over a pair of leggings or skinny jeans, and then add a box or moto jacket.
  2. Don’t wear colors that don’t suit you, even if it really jumps out in a store or you see someone else wearing it – stick to what works for you rather than following others.
  3. Do wear layers – it is better to be too warm and be able to peel off layers if you don’t need them.  Fall weather can be unpredictable, so planning for worst case scenario is always what I find to be the best.
  4. Don’t wear things that cause unnecessary muffin top.  A pair of skinny jeans or leggings that is too tight is just going to push everything up and cause an unflattering look.
  5. Do wear boots and booties with jeans or dresses and tights not just because they are more practical but also because they add a little funk.
  6. Don’t follow “rules” such as “don’t wear White after Labor Day” – this has always been something I have chosen to ignore, because I love wearing White and winter White during all the seasons, but I really do love how it can look in the fall and winter.
  7. Do invest in a great statement coat or jacket.  You are definitely going to need it, so you may as well make sure that while you’re wearing it you look fabulous.  It is the first thing that people see when you’re outside, so you may as well make sure that the first impression is a great one!
  8. Don’t keep your look inside a style bubble – step outside the lines and try something new (like perhaps a sweater dress with some knitted tights, or a pair of faux leather leggings and a long sweater).
  9. Do break out the tights – and get really creative with some new styles and colors for the season.  While I was in England last month I found some really unusual ones and have worn them already…

I am so excited for fall…there are so many possibilities and not just with our outfits…I hope you find these tips useful, and that if you haven’t already started planning your fall looks, that now you have some new ideas to help you!
