UNDERWHELMED: Some fans reportedly walked out halfway through the performance

But clearly Justin Bieber didn't get the memo.

Countless fans were thrilled to find out the Canadian crooner would close the opening night of the festival, but the mood quickly soured after his performance left many cold.

Before the set had even wrapped, fans on social media began slating the hit-maker for failing to sing live.

Clearly the 'distract them with flashy dance moves' strategy din't pan out how he'd planned…

RIP OFF: Concert-goers lamented paying £80 to 'listen to a CD'

"Justin Bieber you miming p****" one Twitter user fumed.

"I love Justin Bieber but tonight he was miming, not cool," another added.

"Justin Bieber is mining at V Fest. I ain't paid 80 for a ticket to listen to his CD and see him run around on stage," a third chimed in.

In fact, it seemed like there wasn't a true Belieber in sight on social media, with no-one rushing to the star's defence.

DISTRACTION?: At least the choreography looked good...

Others cringed at the 22-year-old's segue into new single Company, in which he lamented about being homesick.

"I've been on tour a long time now – away from my friends and family. It gets tough sometimes…you just need company," he explained.

"We don't value life as much as we should. I went through a period where I didn't value life as much as I do now, but life is a gift.

"We're together for a reason. I don't think God makes mistakes."

PREACHER: Bieber spoke about his faith halfway through the set

Singer, model and apparently, preacher.

"Is this a lecture or a concert? Wrap it up Biebs," one less-than-impressed fan moaned.

"Omg I'm so over this philosophy bullsh*t," another agreed.

Maybe just stick to the catchy tunes in future, Justin…
